Why would you choose ReFS or NTFS for a given project?

Limits are the same between the two in terms of file name length, path length and file size.

However max volume size is massively different:

  • Max vol size in NTFS: 256TB
  • Max vol size in ReFS: 4.7ZB (Zettabytes)

So clearly some future proofing there!!

There is a massive list of features between ReFS and NTFS. Some features are supported on both, some are exclusive to NTFS and some to ReFS. So its important to know what future you require before specifying which your volume will use.

For example ReFS is NOT bootable and does not support deduplication. Where as NTFS supports both of these features.
