Virtual Machines
There was a time when a buisness had a seperate physical system for each and every service. This was done for security purposes - if one service was compromised, the other services were not at risk as they are on a separated. With the use of virtual machines, the services can still be run on separate systems, but only one physical system is required to run all of the systems.
The Memory and CPUs are shared between the Virtual Machines. As the services will make use of the resources at different times, they can be over booked to maximise their use.
In practice, the virtual machines are likely to be cloned between two systems to give redundancy.
