These files work like alias files. If users were to move to a different domain for example, the canonical file can ease the transfer.

The difference between the two files is the the canonical file appies to incoming mail, while the Generic file applies to outgoing mail.

These files follow a simlat pattern to the access file:

<syntaxhighlight>
pattern result
</syntaxhighlight>

Patterns can be includes IPs, Host names or networks. Results are where the mail should be forwarded to, either another address of email server.

== Example Patterns ==
