Tender: CERN IT-3893 (Compute) - July 2012

From Define Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

General

  • July 2012 complete date
  • 150000 HEPSPEC per contractor (2 contractors)
  • Split across 2 datacentres (Meyrin & Wigner)

Actions

  • FatTwin SOR might not be possible with specified time frame.

FatTwin worked out too expensive mainly because of 95W max TDP CPU support

  • MN/MP arrange for SOR unit(s)
  • JH/MP to confirm riser support for at least 1 x PCI-E x16 slot for 2u Twin

Only 3 x PCI-E x8 riser available at this time'

  • MN/MP to price up the two solution specs and options detailed below

Specs and pricing provided to partners for for FatTwin and 2U Twin

Benchmarking

http://it-div-procurements.web.cern.ch/it-div-procurements/IT-3893/

  • HEP FIO Disk IOPs
  • HEPSPEC
  • Power Measurements
  • HEP FIO = 2 x HEPSPEC

Solutions

General

  • 2GB per virtual core (48GB 6-core or 64GB 8-core)
  • 150GB HDD per virtual core (3.6TB 6-core or 4.8TB 8-core)
  • Without RAID controller, HDDs must be connected to motherboard
  • 1 x PCI-E x16 (16 lanes) for 10GbE NIC option (see below)
  • Maximum of 2U per enclosure (4U FatTwin has been authorised as per MP/IM and CERN)
  • Maximum of 250kW

Solution 1

  • 6027TR-D70RF (2U Twin - 2 Node)
  • 2 x Xeon E5-2660 (Max TDP of 95W) - per node
  • 8 x 8GB DDR3 Reg ECC 1333MHz+ modules - per node
  • 3 x 2TB 7,200RPM HDDs (to meet capacity and performance requirement) - per node

Optional Parts

  • LSI 9280-8e
  • 10GbE NIC (single port SFP+ ideally)

Solution 2

  • F617R2-RT (8-node FatTwin no SAS, 8-DIMM version if possible)
  • 2 x Xeon E5-2670 seems like the best bet - per node
  • 8 x 8GB DDR3 Reg ECC 1333MHz+ modules - per node
  • 5 x 1TB 2.5" HDD - per node

Optional Parts

  • LSI 9280-4i4e + cables
  • AOC-CTG-i1S (Single port 10GbE MicroLP card)
  • Option to use SSD (640GB per node e.g. 5 x Intel 320Series 160GB)) instead of HDDs

Clarifications

  1. Point 2.10 : Is the option of the LSI 9280-4i4e Raid controller mandatory? Is it disqualifying if this is not proposed in the tender?
Concerning the option related to clause 2.10 in the tender technical specification and the Items 'D' and 'E' in the options table in section 3.7 of the tender form. Feedback from several bidders indicate it is difficult to fulfill this with any standard solutions. The requirement has therefore been relaxed to the following: If there is already an on-board RAID controller supporting RAID1, JBOD and global hot-spares this is acceptable for the internal disks. For attaching an external disk enclosure you may offer an external RAID controller, LSI 9280-8e, but this option is no longer mandatory.
  2. Point 6.1.3 : What is the purpose of providing a remote access to Cern of the first fully configured enclosure? Is it linked with the 2 samples of evaluation units that are required?
The purpose is twofold. First, we want to make sure that SOL is working as expected to avoid issues with systems in remote hosting sites. Then, we want to make sure that all our sanity checks can run without any problem and that the system is built and configured as required prior to shipping.
  3. Point 3.5 : precision concerning Mac addresses on the ship box and system labels. Do you need them also for this tender?
We need to have the MAC addresses, serial numbers, etc... sent to us on a separate spreadsheet in an electronic format (cf. 4.4.2). In addition, each enclosure and each system unit must be labeled with their corresponding serial number and contract ID (cf. 3.5.2 and 3.5.3). Regarding the packaging, each "box" must reflect the amount of enclosure and system units contained together with their corresponding serial numbers and contract ID. No other information is required on the packaging.
  4. Point 8.2.2 : What is the amount of the servers that will be installed in Switzerland and Hungary? Could you please give us a percentage in order to size the stock for each country?
The amount of servers that shall be shipped to the Wigner site in Hungary is currently not known. It will be known during the autumn when purchase orders will be placed on this tender. However, we appreciate that costs for shipment of replacement parts, which we remind you has to be carried by the contractor asstipulated in 8.2.2, can be different for the two sites. Therefore, for adjudication purposes only, it can be assumed that 1/4 of the servers will be installed at the Wigner site in Hungary and the remaining 3/4 at CERN Meyrin site, Switzerland.
  5. Point 8.2.5 : Regarding the option for the on-site destruction and replacement drives, can we indicate this option under point 3.7 of the tender as a new item, item F for example? if not where shall we indicate it?
This is an oversight on our side. In order to overcome this shortcoming, the unit price for replacement drives in case CERN requires on-site destruction shall be indicated under REMARKS in section 10 of the tender form.
  6. Is an onsite installation requested for the servers delivered to Switzerland and Hungary?
    No
